  4. Interval notation requires one pair of brackets for an AND (or tweener) and two pairs of bracket for an OR (or ooh-fa).

3≤x<10 would be written as [3,10)

x≤3 or x>10 would be written as (-∞,3] or (10,∞)

Check that regents prep link from the blog post of the other day.

  5. Dear Online,

I'm not sure what question you are referring to BUT (with one 't') let's give it a try.

All numbers more than 2 units away from -3.

A simple way to look at it would be to say that the number has to be less than -5 OR more than -1. OO-FAH, I think we've got {x|x<-5 or x>-1} as an answer.

A more interesting way to look at it would be to say that the difference between x and -3 must be at least 2, from a distance-related perspective, which brings in the concept of absolute value.

So, absolute value of that difference must be greater than 2.

    |x-(-3)|>2

    |x+3|>2
    splits to 2 inequalities

    x+3<-2 OR x+3>2

solve and you get x<-5 OR x>-1

    different methods, same answer!

  6. Dear Confused & Annoyed,

Thanks for asking the question... I'm sure that you speak for several others, so I'll answer all of you...

Sorry you feel this way... even sorrier that you knew this test has been scheduled for more than a a week (with no new material introduced) and you chose tonight to articulate your confusion. If you want to do well in any difficult subject, you will have to make an effort, more than you are making now. I am here to help you, but I ran out of "smart pills" a long time ago... you are going to have to ask questions and do some extra work in order to achieve success. You can do it... but only if you make success a priority.

I'm here to help. I wish you success. Good luck, good night... maybe I'll see you in the morning... I was here on Tuesday morning and Tuesday after school... a grand total of one student stopped by. Wanna see my head explode? Just ask me what you can do to improve your grade!
