PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD... In my infinite wisdom (is that negative or positive infinity?), I am postponing the Unit 4 Test until after the winter break. You will still have a quiz on Wednesday... you will be required to do the following:
1) Answer questions such as the Chapter Review pg 284 #4-12
2) For section 4-4, I expect you to be able to graph linear and nonlinear functions using a table of values, given an equation such as:
a) y = -x+2
b) f(x) = x^2 - 3
c) y = f(x) = -x^2 + 4
d) y = | x + 2 |
e) y = | x | + 2
(Note that abs val equations in d & e will generate different graphs)
I will not test you on continuous vs. discrete or anything else for that matter... JUST what I listed above. RELATE-DEFINE-WRITE will NOT be on this quiz!
This is called an opportunity... the payback is that you will have work to do over break... especially (but not limited to) those of you who still need to "remedy" Unit 3 Inequalities.
Can you check my work Mr.C on question # 16 in the packet,ill write it out...
ReplyDeleteA team's divers assembles at an elevation of -10ft relative to the surface of the water. The team dives at a rate of -50ft/min. Write a rule that represents the team's depth (d) as a function of time (t). What is the team's depth after 3 minutes?
I think my work is pretty solid but answer doesn't match up; here's what i did...
RELATE:
Teams depth after 3 minutes=
feet below water PLUS rate( ft times min)
DEFINE:
d= depth the team has reached in minutes (rate)
n= number of minutes it took the team to reach the depth
WRITE:
d= -10-(-50n)
d= f(n)-10-(-50n)
d (n)= -10- (-50n)
SOLVE:
d=-10-(-50n)
= -10-(-50)(3)
=-10+150
=140 ft in 3 minutes
I was questioning my answer because I thought that answer should be a negative since it's depth as in underwater or below O.
In A.S.O.C need help....thanks
Dear Divers:
ReplyDeleteThe rate of descent is a negative movement... if you set the rate as -50ft per min., then you need to ADD it, in order that you go in the right direction. If you set the rate as positive, that's fine too, as long as you subtract it.
Your answer of +140 after 3 minutes means that your diver is suspended in mid-air, 140 ft above the water. You subtracted the negative descent!
Ca-peesh?
So my work is correct?? Because that was my main concern...
ReplyDeleteEverything was good except:
ReplyDeleteWRITE:
d= -10+(-50n)
d= f(n)-10+(-50n)
d (n)= -10+(-50n)
See your work above, you subtracted a negative instead of adding, so your divers went UP instead of DOWN.
ohhhh Alright... thanks Mr.C!
ReplyDeleteThank you Mr. C for your help!
ReplyDeleteif you tell us to graph y=f(x)=x+2,
ReplyDeleteis that any different than y=x+2?
a little confuzzled I understand what the f means but does it mean the same thing as the other, just stretched out?
Im pretty sure that it doesnt change it the equation...y= f(x)=x+2 means tht whatver y is a function of whatver x is; it does not change the equation just another format ca-peesh? As Mr. C would say
ReplyDeletethanks thats what i thought i just needed clarification from a smart person.Thanks mr. c haha thanks candace
ReplyDeleteVIVA!! There is NO DIFFER-ANCE!
