hw #6-3 Solving Systems Using Elimination

You have a QUIZ (sections 6-1 thru 6-4) on Wednesday (Yippee!!)... if you can do the problem sets, you will enjoy the quiz... there will be NO Pythagorean Theorem or Diamond Problems on this quiz.

  4. #10) One party of mountain climbers, the “Monties,” begins an expedition with a 310-pound food supply. They plan to eat 20 pounds of food per day. A second party, the “Pythons,” simultaneously begins an expedition with 250 pounds and plans to eat 10 pounds per day.

    You should see y-intercepts (starting lbs on Day Zero) and you should be able to extract "rates of change" (i.e. lbs per day), in this case a negative/decreasing rate.

    From there, you gotsk your two equations and you can simply solve using any method you see fit...

  6. So is the quiz on Wednesday just on Elimination & Substitution methods with systems of equations? And the quiz tomorrow,what is that pertaining to? Just a mid-term or retake of mid-terms or......and could you go through 4a on set 6b im having a bit o trouble with it. Also number 5 on 6b thnks to anyone who replies....

    1. Tomorrow's "booster test" after school is just that... it CANNOT HURT your grade... if you do well, it might help a bit.

      The booster is a "mid-term-ish" with a focus on linear equations (units 4&5) but material from the the whole first half of the year (evaluating expressions, solving equations in one variable, etc.).

  7. PS 6B #4a)

    9x − 5y = 4
    3x + 2y = 5

    We need to "match" the coefficients so that we can eliminate a variable... I prefer to match "opposite coefficients" so that we are ALWAYS ADDING... that "eliminates" a technique issue.

    So, after multiplying both sides of the second equation by -3 we have a new system:

    9x − 5y = 4
    -9x - 6y = -15

    combining by addition we get:

    -11y = -11
    y = 1

    ... that's the y-coordinate

    sub back to obtain the x-coordinate... I'll let u do that!

      therefore: this = that

      y = 6x + 6
      y = −8x − 22

      therefore, 6x + 6 = −8x − 22

      This looks like an October problem to me now... how about you?

    1. We did break-even points over one month ago with the Health Club problem and the Tee-shirt problem. The break-even point is simply the point of intersection, aka the solution to a system.

    1. Are you telling that you cannot come up with an attempt at a first step? I told ALL of you at the beginning of the year that when you ask a question on the blog, you should try to ARTICULATE your attempt to solve it. For example, in this case you should tell me the two equations that you derived in 6a... (oh, and this problem has been sitting on the blog for over 24 hours... this is supposed to be a COLLABORATIVE space where students chat with students... no one in the class has ANY IDEA how to work on this problem? Gee-pers creepers, folks!!)

      Here's the problem: Two rental car companies are competing for business in Morristown. Drive-a-Dream charges $35 and $0.15 per mile while Rent-a-Ride charges $20 and $0.35 per mile. Which company should you choose?

      a) Let x represent the number of miles and y represent the total cost. Write an equation that represents the charges to rent a car at each agency.

      YOU SHOULD HAVE TWO EQUATIONS:
      y = .35x + 20
      y = .15x + 35

      WELL, Y=THIS AND Y=THAT, SO THIS=THAT, YES?

      .35x + 20 = .15x + 35

      I'll guess you don't like the decimals... WELL, very similar to fractions, we can get rid of decimals by multiplying both sides by 100, yes?

      35x + 2000 = 15x + 3500

      Looks like ALGEBRA-ROLLERCOASTER time to me... how about you??
